Ambulatory thyroid surgery for the recovery of surgical waiting lists after COVID-19 – The DECORATED trial

Lo Studio “Ambulatory thyroid surgery for the recovery of surgical waiting lists after COVID-19 – The DECORATED “, promosso da SICE all’interno del Comitato di ricerca sulla Endocrino-Metabolica coordinato dal prof.

Elective thyroid surgery has been severely affected in the last two years by the COVID-19 pandemic. In Italy, the reduction of thyroid related surgical procedures was as high as 65% in the peak phases of the pandemic, causing an important backlog. At the same time, thyroidectomy is increasingly being performed as an outpatient procedure worldwide, especially in the US, with comparable outcomes and readmission rates to overnight stay after surgery in high-volume centers. However, in Italy, ambulatory thyroid surgery is rarely practiced due to the characteristics of its healthcare system, to the lack of a capillary home care support on the territory, and reluctancy from part of the surgical community. This specific timeframe represents a unique opportunity to drive a practice change all-over the country, while providing a practical solution to the huge backlog of procedures accumulated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
